My good friend Alessandra Leimer is part of a group show in Basel, Switzerland (that's her image on the left). You can find details of the exhibition here and details about the artists here.
Promoted Work: Jennifer Medina
Jennifer Medina is a young photographer that moves between New York, Los Angeles and Florida. As a non-American, I am not sure of those logistics but I get this feeling that her work, while capturing the youth of these cities, also pushes against their influence - her pale figures aren't very LA; the grain of her film doesn't have the sharpness of New York; her desaturated palate doesn't have the neon of Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers.
The result is photography with a very personal voice and some very endearing photographs of kids doing shit that kids do.
Her main site is here and her visual diary is here; they are worth following.
Promoted Work: Max Montalban Exhibition
Max Montalban has been featured on this site before. Some of his more provocative imagery is certainly a very good fit but he also touches on some of the more difficult aspects of life.
If you live in Mexico, please support this exhibition; if you are outside (as most of my readers are) I invite you to follow his tumblr and get a taste of what it's like living on the edge.
Promoted Work: Austin Stovall
Above is a video of Devon Ginn's Panhandler's Poetry; it's an amazing piece of work that is beautifully captured by Austin Stovall. The video is a recording of a great performance but it is also a wonderful portrait of the man - he moves inside a static frame in a very narrow depth of field; almost any one of the these images could be pulled as a perfect still.
Austin Stovall's portfolio site is here and he can also be followed on tumblr.
Promoted Work: Susana Diniz
Welcome to the dark and haunted world of Susana Diniz.
Susana is from Lisbon, Portugal but it is in the deep countryside where she seeks her inspiration; she crafts her environments into the stage for her own imaginarium where her characters play out an impenetrable narrative.
It is really nice to see a young artist start out with such a distinctive and personal style. You can find her on tumblr, flickr and facebook.
Promoted Work: Jenny Boot
Jenny Boot is a photographer that pushes her own boundaries; she says that she wants to "get as intimate as possible, I want to see the soul, the naked truth, the bare skin, in order to come to the essence of the personality of the people I’m working with."
She's based in Amsterdam.
Promoted Work: Bernhard Handick
Bernhard Handick is a photographer and mixed media artist.
There is very little that needs to be said about his work; he is fun, subversive, absurd and provocative.
He has put himself out there and is always looking for creative people to collaborate with.
Bernhard was recently featured by REVS Magazine blog (they have a great aesthetic) and he also has work featured in the first issue of P Magazine which has the makings of a really interesting publication.
Promoted Work: Nuno Moreira "State of Mind" at Totodo
Nuno Moreira exhibition at Totodo
I promoted Nuno Moreira late last year. His exhibition State of Mind is now showing at Totodo, Tokyo.
If you're not in Japan, check out his website; he's a very interesting street photographer.
Promoted Work: Danny Roche
I love this guy.
Danny Roche is based in New York and he's already caught the eye of publications like REVS. He shoots some really beautiful portraits.
Take a look at this shot of Olga Timokhina; check out the fine detail and the careful use of depth of field. There is a technical proficiency to some of his work that is pretty incredible but the best part of it is that it's not self-congratulatory, it really is in service of taking an honest portrait. Going through his work really does give an intimate view of his subjects.
You can visit his main site but I also recommend following his tumblrs: here & here.
Promoted Work: Rosabel Martínez Pinzón
Rosabel Martínez Pinzón is a young photographer from Bucaramanga, Colombia. Her work is intentionally undefined, giving it an ephemeral quality.
She is a photographer working right out on the edge of meaning; it'll be very interesting to see where she goes with it.
She is currently exhibiting work in her college graduate show and she'll also be exhibiting in late August at the Cuba Biennial. She often displays her work in unconventional ways; like printing her images into the large mirrors used to monitor buildings and public places - she likes to see how people interact with her work.
