Promoted Work: DE VIOLENCE ET D'INTIMIDATION

Maxime Brodeur - DE VIOLENCE ET D'INTIMIDATION

Canada, in response to student protests of rising tuition fees, has banned the wearing of masks during protests and prohibited groups larger than 50 people from congregating in demonstrations. It is a reminder that freedom is something that needs to be exercised and fought for because, even in "free" countries, there are forces that set out to curtail the freedom of expression and the freedom of association.

Maxime has taken the most direct and literal opposition to these laws by putting his subjects in masks; he is planning 51 portraits, the number required to constitute an illegal gathering.

You can find an English language version of Maxime's goals on his personal tumblr. You can also follow the project on Facebook (French) and Twitter (French).

Details of the situation in Québec can be found here.

Promoted Work: Geoff Dunlop - Go Gentle

Geoff Dunlop

Geoff Dunlop is exhibiting his series Go Gentle near to Carra, Tuscany from December 7 until January 6

The show will feature projections, accompanied by associated prints.

Geoff sent over some beautiful high-resolution images:

Here is the text that accompanies the show:

The British artist Geoff Dunlop is one of eight at Colletivo 1, an exhibition exploring the edges of contemporary photography. The show runs at the Garage Bonci gallery in Pietrasanta, Tuscany, Italy, between December 7, 2012 and January 6, 2013. Pietrasanta is known as the City of the Artists because of its long association with the working of the local Carrara marble by artists as distinguished as Michelangelo.

In contrast with the materiality of marble Geoff Dunlop's featured work, GO GENTLE, deals with the elusiveness of the digital image and the way its slips and slides with time.  The centrepiece of GO GENTLE is a projection that focusses on the movement artist Hayley Barker.  Where the land meets the sea the figure Hayley portrays stands, sits and lies, moves and stays frozen in time. Eventually she gives herself up to the place, as we all must give ourselves up to the inevitable.

Geoff comments: "Some people say that they should rave against the inevitable. Show their anger. Resist. Refuse to “go gentle into that good night ... rage, rage against the dying of the light,” as the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas declared on the death of his father.

"GO GENTLE is not intended as counter-polemic against this point of view. Perhaps life should always, will always, fight for its continued existence. But the piece does reflect upon the human desire to control, shape, transform and fight the inevitable. Could a barrier against change be built high enough – and, if so, with what consequences?"

As if to emphasise the way the photographic image challenges and defies time, Geoff complements the projection with five large prints taken from the "performance".

Promoted Work: Mick de Lint

Mick de Lint

Mick de Lint is based in the Netherlands and works in film and photography. He has been published in some of my favorite publications like REVS and Bambi. He has also been working with Scotch & Soda, filming, editing and directing their campaign films.

I've chosen to focus on his work in film because I feel like there is a fluid relationship between photography and film. Mick de Lint's film work can be found on his Vimeo Channel.

Great work; I hope to feature a lot more in the future.

Promoted Work: Nuno Moreira - State of Mind

Nuno Moreira

"Without an outside view we would be completely lost."

NUNO MOREIRA

"I work with photography without limits or boundaries, no deadlines, just for my own sake and pleasure."

NUNO MOREIRA

Nuno Moreira is working on a series of photographs called State of Mind that has taken him from Russia, Portugal, Mexico, Spain and now to Japan. It's seems to be a project without direction or end; a project in constant construction. He simply illuminates the world he travels through but also reflects on his state of mind and how that influences how he sees.

Promoted Work: Brittany Markert in the LOST SOULS Exhibition

Brittany Markert

Brittany Markert is a really good film photographer; her style is dark and authentic. She is a part of Outlet's inaugural exhibition LOST SOULS which runs until November 30th.

Brittany has also set up an print shop to sell prints from the show. I have the good fortune of owning one of her prints (which made it's way to me while I was still working in the Swaziland bush). Go and support her; she's a great artist.

Promoted Work: Huesos de Ángel by Santiago Valverde & Rosalie Linde

Santiago Valverde

Santiago Valverde & Rosalie Linde have collaborated to create an anthology of her poetry and his photographs called Huesos de Ángel. The poetry is in Spanish; if you have Spanish as a language then please go out and support this - words and images have a powerful way of working together and from the imagery, this looks like a very interesting project.

Promoted Work: The Citizen's Band - Grab A Root and Growl

The Citizen's Band

When I started this, I never thought it would be a vehicle to promote a project like The Citizen's Band, a politically charged cabaret troupe. But here I am; happy to do it.

I think very little of politics beyond the idea that politicians need to get the fuck out of the way and let people live their lives. That's how I believe it should work but we all know that that's not how it works at all. Politics has become a racket of influence peddling and naked avarice; it also has a penchant for dictating our private affairs. I grew up in a authoritarian country and it made me deeply skeptical of their "authority"; I will always support any creative force that pushes against top down politics.

The Citizen's Band's album Grab A Root And Growl is bawdy and theatrical but it takes on the very serious ideas of equality and accountability. I'm not an American but these are universal ideals.

Music criticism is not my thing so I'm not going to give a traditional review of the album (you can listen to the full album here). I liked it.The stand out for me is Zoe Kravitz singing You Can't Make It By Yourself. The Citizen's Band looks like something amazing to watch live and if you have the chance, go and see them (details on their site). Buy their album and support them; their profits go to a really good cause.

Exercise your democracy (wherever you may be).

Promoted Work: Hugo Keizer - "[I am a] WaterColor, I wash off"

Hugo Keizer

Hugo Keizer has returned with a fantastic series called "[I am a] WaterColor, I wash off" inspired by the words of Anne Sexton.

Hugo is an outlier; a photographer that chases down his own vision. His work is always intense; his subjects always stare at you with a piercing gaze.

In this series he has covered his models with paint but instead of concealing them, he has got them to reveal more of themselves from beneath their masks. An incredible set of images - go check out the full set on his site
